The song also became a hit, peaking at 8 on UK charts. When Deep Purple performed the song live, Gillan and guitarist Ritchie Blackmore would play a guitar-vocal duel in the middle. This would always end with an extremely long, high-pitched scream from Gillan before the band returned to playing the original song. An example can be heard on the live album Made In Japan recorded in There once was a woman A strange kind of woman The kind that gets written down in history Her name was Nancy Her face was nothing fancy She left a trail of happiness and misery.
I loved her Everybody loved her She loved everyone and gave them good return I tried to take her I even tried to break her She said I ain't for takin' won't you ever learn. I want you I need you I gotta be near you I spent my money as I took my turn I want you I need you gotta be near you Ooh I got a strange kind of woman.
She looked like a raver But I could never please her On Wednesday mornings boy you can't go far I couldn't get her But things got better, she said Saturday nights from now on baby you're my star. She finally said she loved me I wed her in a hurry No more callers and I glowed with pride I'm dreaming I feel like screaming I won my woman just before she died.

The band's line-up currently including Ian Gillan, and guitarist Steve Morse from has been much more stable in recent years, although keyboardist Jon Lord's retirement from the band in being succeeded by Don Airey left Ian Paice as the only original Deep Purple member still in the band.
Deep Purple were ranked number 22 on VH1 's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme, and a poll on radio station Planet Rock ranked them 5th among the "most influential bands ever". Informer Searchers drummer Chris Curtis contacted London businessman Tony Edwards, in the hope that he would manage a new group he was putting together, to be called Roundabout. Curtis' vision was a "supergroup" where the band members would get on and off, like a musical roundabout. The first recruit to the band was classically trained Hammond organ player Jon LordCurtis's flatmate, who had most notably played with the Artwoods led by Art Woodbrother of future Faces and Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Woodand including Keef Hartley.
Simper had previously been in Johnny Kidd and the Piratesand survived the car crash that killed Kidd. Lord alerted the two that he had been recruited for the Roundabout project, after which Simper and Little suggested guitarist Ritchie Blackmorewhom Lord had never met. HEC persuaded Blackmore to return from Hamburg to audition for the new group.
He was making a name for himself as a studio session guitarist, and had also been a member of the OutlawsScreaming Lord Sutchand Neil Christian. Curtis's erratic behaviour and lifestyle, fuelled by his use of LSDcaused him to display a sudden lack of interest in the project he had started, forcing HEC to dismiss him from Roundabout.
Lord and Blackmore were keen to continue; they recruited additional members, retaining Tony Edwards as their manager. Tagging along with Evans was his band's drummer Ian Paice.
Blackmore had seen an year-old Paice on tour with the Maze in Germany inand had been impressed by his drumming. The band hastily arranged an audition for Paice, given that Woodman was vocally unhappy with the direction of the band's music.
During a brief tour of Denmark and Sweden in April, in which they were still billed as Roundabout, Blackmore suggested a new name: " Deep Purple ", named after his grandmother's favourite song.
Second to Deep Purple was "Concrete God", which the band thought was too harsh to take on.Deep Purple are a British hard rock band originally from Hertford. When they broke up for the first time in Julythe band featured Lord, Paice, vocalist David Coverdalebassist and vocalist Glenn Hughesand guitarist and vocalist Tommy Bolin. By the time Evans and Simper played their last show with the band on 4 Julynew vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover had already been recruited from Episode Six.
After eight years of inactivity, on 27 April it was announced that the Mark II lineup of Deep Purple were set to return for a worldwide tour and a new album. In Augustdespite having started work on the band's next album, Turner was suddenly dismissed from Deep Purple. Blackmore was eventually officially replaced by former Dixie Dregs and Kansas guitarist Steve Morsewho debuted with the band at three low-key gigs in November and was later offered the position permanently.

Print Topic Switch to Threaded Mode.Made in Japan is a double live album by English rock band Deep Purplerecorded during their first tour of Japan in August It was originally released in Decemberwith a US release in Apriland became a commercial and critical success.
The band were well known for their strong stage act, and had privately recorded several shows, or broadcast them on radio, but were unenthusiastic about recording a live album until their Japanese record company decided it would be good for publicity.
They insisted on supervising the live production, including using Martin Birchwho had previously collaborated with the band, as engineer, and were not particularly interested in the album's release, even after recording. The tour was successful, with strong media interest and a positive response from fans. The album was an immediate commercial success, particularly in the US, where it was accompanied by the top five hit " Smoke on the Water ", and became a steady seller throughout the s.
A three-CD set of most of the tour's performances was released inwhile a remastered edition of the album with a CD of extra tracks was released in Ina deluxe edition was announced with further bonus material.
The album had a strong critical reception and continues to attract praise. A Rolling Stone readers' poll in ranked Made in Japan the sixth best live album of all time. Consequently, there was a demand for bootleg recordings of the band. The most notorious of these was an LP entitled H Bomb recorded at Aachen on 11 July which led to a subsequent court case when Virgin Records ' Richard Branson was prosecuted for selling it.

ByDeep Purple had achieved considerable commercial success in Japan, including several hit singles, so it made sense to tour there. Recordswanted to record the tour for a live album to be released in the country.
The band's live setlist had been revamped at the start of the year, immediately after recording the album Machine Headand that album made up a substantial proportion of new material. Although the setlist remained the same for most of the year, opening with "Highway Star" and closing with "Lazy" and "Space Truckin'", the band's musical skill and structure meant there was sufficient improvisation within the songs to keep things fresh.
The band arrived in Japan on 9 August, a week before the tour started, to a strong reception, and were greeted with gifts and flowers. Subsequently, Lord noted that he felt this attitude meant the spontaneity of the performances and interplay between the band members was captured well. The second gig in Osaka was considered to be the stronger of the two, and indeed this show made up the bulk of the released LP.
Only one song, "Smoke on the Water" from 15 August show was used, and this may simply have been because it was the only gig that Blackmore played the song's opening riff as per the studio album. The band considered the gig at Tokyo on 17 August to be the best of the tour.
Glover remembered "twelve or thirteen thousand Japanese kids were singing along to 'Child in Time'" and considered it a career highlight, as did Gillan. When Blackmore smashed his guitar during the end of "Space Truckin'" and threw it into the audience, several of them clambered past fans to try and retrieve it.
Blackmore was annoyed, but the rest of the band found the incident amusing.
